A Capitalist Veneer?

I am sure many, after happening upon my blog here, have not read my previous posts. Lately, I have been very outspoken about what is going on in our country and have posted about my thoughts and feelings. More than not, I have had an opposing opinion about our politician’s and leader’s thoughts and actions. I feel they were and still are trampling on our Constitution and not doing what is best for this country.  I think our rights and liberties are being ignored, and our economic system is changing from what we know it to be. However, I opted to keep my opinions to myself until recently.

I am disappointed about the direction this country is headed (sometimes I think fascism).  Here are some excerpts taken from an article by Sheldon Richman on Fascism at the Library of Economics and Liberty-

As an economic system, fascism is socialism with a capitalist veneer.

To maintain high employment and minimize popular discontent, a fascist governments undertakes massive public-works projects financed by steep taxes, borrowing, and fiat money creation. While many of these projects were domestic—roads, buildings, stadiums—the largest project of all was militarism, with huge armies and arms production.

A less complicated read than Sheldon Richman’s article on Fascism, can be read at Wikepedia.  There are too many similarities on that economic system and our system for our system to continue to call itself Capitalism (Individualist of economic).

  1. Hi again Liz I am going to read as much as I can of your posts. I do feel definitely that our rights are being trampled on and I have heard there is great unrest in this country. People are even talking civil war. Is that possible? the government is trampling on our constitution. They probably have not read it like the spendulous bill. Hugs

  2. Yes, so interesting. I was not familiar with the term fiat money, but I sure recognized it when I read the definition. Also was enlightened by term fascism, which I thought was a synonym for dictatorship. Thanks for the elucidation. Don’t get me started on the social problems down here. Don’t get me started. Well, there’s that murder that some of our students committed recently. Talk about some dumb criminals. Over marijuana.

  3. Liz,
An interesting read. I agree we have moved away from capitalism and have been doing it for some time now. I also agree with Lori that government is doing as it pleases regardless of the best interest of those who have elected them. I’m not sure when it started.

I still equate what our government is up to with the idea of “bread and circuses” more than a move toward fascism. Fascism has a component of fierce nationalism to it that doesn’t quite equate with, “It’s the economy, stupid.”

  4. Hi Hon,

Well, to be honest, I can’t wrap my head around a lot of the “polito-speak”. The only thing I am really concerned about is healthcare and when the H@$# are we going to have a single payer system!! Ugh. The rest of it, the things on which you speak, I can’t really comment on because as I said, I really don’t understand. I feel kind of helpless, I feel like the government will do what they please, whoever is in office, and we have no say. I am going off to cry now..

    Hugs Lori

  5. Hi Liz, Well my dear you sure had a lot to get off your chest, very interesting reading indeed. I blame the fat cats, ceo’s and unions for the most of the problems. Have a nice Friday. *hugs*
