To Felt The Hat-

Your hat will look extremely large before felting.  *See photo below.

To felt, I placed the hat in the washing machine along with 4 pillowcases.  Using *hot water TO WASH AND COLD WATER TO RINSE, a normal setting and the smallest load setting (making sure that the water level covers these 5 articles) add a small amount of liquid detergent.  Let machine run the full cycle.  Remove the hat from the machine.  Block/Form the hat and air dry.  DO NOT PUT THE HAT IN THE DRYER!  Unless you want a doll sized hat.

*UPDATE: WASH IN HOT WATER AND RINSE IN COLD WATER. THE CYCLE SHOULD TAKE APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES.

This is how the stitches look after felting.

To clean your hat, hand wash in cold water and let air dry.

  1. I’ve envied people wearing this sort of hat for years but been a bit too worried about the final effect in case I ended up with either an egg cosy or bin bag. No longer! I shall venture forth and have a go. Many thanks for sharing this.
